By Thomas Haribol, ISKCON News Managing Editor | Jun 03, 2023
On May 31st, ISKCON devotees in Jos, Nigeria, spoke to over 100 university students in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Jos. The 2.5-hour presentation, “Krishna Consciousness: An Aspect of Hinduism,” offered by Salika Das, was interactive, intense, and educational.
Jos is a city located in the central part of Nigeria with nearly a million inhabitants. It is known for its pleasant climate, often referred to as the “Jewel of the Savanna.” Jos is culturally diverse, with a mix of different ethnic groups and a rich history and heritage.
ISKCON’s presence in Nigeria started with the establishment of a temple in Lagos, the country’s largest city, in the early 1970s. The ISKCON Jos community has many outreach programs, including college outreach (like the above program), Food for Life prasada distribution, sankirtan, book distribution, and an eco-farm.
