The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) is constructing a new temple in Mauritius that will be a significant milestone for devotees on the island. This project signifies the organization’s sustained presence in Mauritius and will serve as a haven for those seeking spiritual refuge. Moreover, it is a concrete response to the desire of Srila Prabhupada that Mauritius would eventually become a leading Krishna-conscious nation. The temple’s grand design and architecture follow the norms of the ancient Indian science of architecture, Vastu Shilp Shastra, with Lord Krishna as the source of inspiration. It will be opulently decorated, and the presiding deities will be Sri Sri Radha Golokananda Lord Krishna.
Construction on the temple began on December 9, 2022, and is financed entirely by devotee contributions. The total budget is USD 3.6 million for the first construction phase, and USD 1.54 million has been invested so far. Unfortunately, the pandemic and bad weather have caused significant delays in the temple’s construction. Still, the superstructure is nearly complete, and the entire building should be completed by the end of the year.
The Temple of Unity will feature a vast temple hall that can accommodate around 800 people and an auditorium designed to seat 400 persons. In addition, the complex will include multiple function areas, offices, a library, a shop, and other facilities. The underground level will be home to pujari quarters, a gurukula, and other halls for meetings and conferences.
The second construction phase will focus on additional facilities within the temple complex, including residential quarters, a kindergarten, restaurants, hotel apartments, an ayurvedic spa, gym facilities, a retreat center, and Vedic shops.
The new temple’s features and design differ significantly from the existing ISKCON temple in Phoenix, Mauritius. The Temple of Unity will be grander and unique, with additional facilities promoting a Krishna-conscious lifestyle.
In conclusion, the Temple of Unity is an exciting development for ISKCON in Mauritius, representing a significant milestone for devotees and a unifying force for the entire nation. The temple’s grand design and opulent decorations, combined with its location in the heart of urban Mauritius, will make it a visible landmark that signifies ISKCON’s presence and provides a comprehensive devotional experience for visitors. Therefore, the temple’s completion will be eagerly awaited, and special ceremonies and events will be held to mark the occasion.
